Navigation, flight-plan and guidance functions

The KLN 94 calculates aircraft position from GPS satellite signals and combines that position with its approved navigation database. The display can present active waypoint, desired track, bearing, distance, estimated time, ground speed and cross-track information. Flight plans are entered and reviewed from the front panel, and the unit can provide course guidance to a compatible CDI or HSI.

Published operating approvals include VFR and IFR en-route or terminal use when the complete installation, database and operational requirements are satisfied. BRNAV capability is documented for approved configurations. Approach use depends on the installed equipment, current data, annunciation, integrity monitoring and aircraft approval; the catalog listing does not confer operational approval by itself.

The -0102 DC roll-steering output can provide turn anticipation and steering commands to a compatible flight-control system. This output is installation-specific and should not be connected or enabled by assumption. The autopilot model, interface converter, wiring, software and approval basis must be confirmed.

Antenna, indicator and autopilot relationship

A typical signal chain is KA 91 or KA 92 GPS antenna → KLN 94 receiver and navigation processor → compatible KI 208A, KI 209A or other approved deviation indicator, with optional guidance sent to a compatible autopilot interface. These antennas, indicators, annunciators, racks and connectors are related components, not included automatically and not interchangeable with the navigator. Antenna location, coaxial loss, bonding, power supply, indicator scaling and external flag logic all influence system performance. A GPS-position fault can result from antenna, coax, interference, database or aircraft-interface problems rather than the receiver alone.

Installed testing should verify satellite acquisition, position, database validity, flight-plan operation, CDI scaling, annunciation, message handling, lamp dimming, external outputs and any approved roll-steering interface. Bench and aircraft procedures must follow the correct KLN 94 revision.

Installation, identification and applicability

The unit operates in compatible 14 or 28 V aircraft installations with the lamp arrangement specified by the exact suffix. The panel opening, rack, mating connector, cooling, circuit protection and bonding must follow the approved drawing. Receiving inspection should confirm 069-01034-0102, model KLN 94, black bezel, display, keys, knobs, rear connector, serial number and modification markings.

A Bell 206L-4 equipment list documents a KLN 94 installation with KA 92 antenna and KI 208A indicator and gives an installed-system weight reference of approximately 3.6 lb for the listed GPS equipment group. This is a documented application example, not universal approval for every Bell 206 or another aircraft. The intended aircraft equipment list and modification data remain controlling.

Database currency and geographic coverage must be agreed before dispatch. A visually operational display in a photograph does not establish receiver sensitivity, database validity, output configuration or current airworthiness release.
