Heading, course and deviation presentation

The rotating compass card presents aircraft heading under the fixed lubber line. The crew selects a desired course with the course control and can position the heading bug as a visual or flight-director reference in compatible systems. The course arrow, TO/FROM information, lateral-deviation bar and warning flags combine radio-navigation or area-navigation guidance with the stabilized heading reference.

Published system guidance commonly associates one deviation dot with approximately 0.5 degree on localizer, 2 degrees on VOR, 1 nautical mile in en-route RNAV and 0.25 nautical mile in approach RNAV. Those values describe the connected navigation mode and must not be treated as an independent KPI accuracy specification. Full-scale behaviour depends on the selected receiver, converter and approved interface.

Glideslope deviation and validity are displayed when an approved glideslope source is connected. NAV, compass or glideslope flags warn that the applicable input should not be used. A centred pointer with a visible warning flag is not a valid navigation indication, and maintenance testing must check both pointer movement and flag logic.

System interfaces and signal flow

In a compatible installation, a magnetic transmitter and remote directional gyro provide stabilized heading. A VOR, localizer, glideslope or RNAV source supplies selected course and deviation data. The KPI 552B resolves and presents those inputs for the crew, and compatible autopilot equipment may receive or share selected course and heading references through the approved wiring.

A simplified relationship is magnetic sensing and directional gyro → compass control chain → KPI 552B heading card, while navigation receiver or RNAV computer → KPI 552B course, TO/FROM, deviation and flag presentation. KSN 7-series navigation equipment is documented with compatible deviation and flag interfaces in suitable installations. That association does not make every KSN or KPI version universally compatible.

System troubleshooting should confirm excitation, synchro or resolver signals, heading validity, navigation deviation, flag voltage, lighting supply, connector condition and grounding. A display fault can originate in the indicator, remote gyro, magnetic transmitter, navigation receiver, wiring or aircraft configuration.

Installation and receiving inspection

The instrument is designed for a square panel opening with four corner mounting points. The photographed -01 unit has the black BendixKing bezel, moving compass card, heading and course controls, navigation flags and glideslope scale. Installation depth, connector clearance and instrument-panel support must be checked against the aircraft drawing rather than estimated from the front face.

Receiving inspection should verify Part Number 066-3081-01, model KPI 552B, 28 V configuration, serial number, modification marks, glass, compass card, pointers, flags, knobs, mounting holes and rear connector. Bench testing should exercise heading-card rotation, resolver alignment, course and heading controls, lateral and vertical deviation, TO/FROM indications, warning flags and lighting across the approved supply range.

Documented aircraft examples include specific Dornier 228 and Bell 230 equipment configurations, but these references do not establish eligibility for every aircraft of those families. The type design, supplemental approval, equipment list and wiring revision for the intended aircraft remain controlling.
