Expanded scale and decision-height operation

The scale is marked from the close-to-ground region through 2,000 ft, with expanded spacing at low heights where precise visual interpretation is most important. A pointer driven by the radar-altimeter system indicates measured geometric height above the reflecting surface. The pilot can position the decision-height reference with the lower-right control and use the DH annunciation according to the aircraft operating procedure.

Radio height differs from barometric altitude because it measures distance above terrain or another reflecting surface rather than pressure altitude above sea level. Indication can be influenced by terrain, bank angle, antenna geometry, system condition and operating limits. The invalid flag, test response and decision-height alert must therefore be evaluated together with the pointer rather than treating the numerical scale as an isolated measurement.

KRA 405B system relationship

Honeywell KRA 405B installation documentation lists the KNI 415 and KNI 416 as compatible radar-altimeter indicators in approved configurations. A representative signal path is transmitting antenna → terrain reflection → receiving antenna → KRA 405B receiver/transmitter → processed height signal → KNI 416 indication and decision-height alert. The exact transmitter suffix, antenna Part Numbers and wiring depend on the aircraft installation.

The same documentation identifies 066-3044-00 as a black-face KNI 416 with 5 V panel lighting. Other suffixes use 28 V, gray-face or night-vision arrangements, so lighting and suffix are configuration controls rather than cosmetic details. A separate installation kit and companion components are not automatically included with the indicator.

Inspection, testing and exact configuration

Receiving inspection should compare the complete Part Number and serial documentation, bezel, scale, height pointer, decision-height reference, DH annunciator, TEST control, warning flag, housing, connector and mounting points. The product photograph shows the correct KNI 416 front configuration; the allocated serial-numbered unit and its exact plate should be confirmed in the quotation and release documents before shipment.

Bench testing should confirm pointer response across the expanded scale, calibration, damping, decision-height adjustment and annunciation, invalid flag, test function and 5 V lighting. Testing requires an approved radar-altimeter simulator or system test set and current maintenance procedures. Supply, signal and connector pins must not be inferred from a visually similar KNI 415 or another KNI 416 suffix.

This 066-3044-00 KNI 416 is offered in Overhauled condition from partner stock with a six-month warranty. The quotation will identify the allocated serial number, overhaul organization, release documentation, bench-test status and included accessories. The KRA 405B receiver/transmitter, antennas, coaxial cables, connector, installation kit and mounting hardware are included only when expressly stated.
