Heading card and dual bearing pointers

The compass card is graduated in degrees and cardinal directions to present the aircraft’s magnetic heading when driven by a compatible slaved or stabilized heading system. Two differently shaped pointers can show selected bearing information from separate navigation sources. Their actual assignments depend on the aircraft switching and wiring configuration; a pointer should not automatically be labeled ADF or VOR without checking the installed system documentation.

The display helps the crew compare heading, station bearing and relative geometry without performing a separate mental conversion. It can support intercepts, position awareness and cross-checking when the connected sources are valid. Accuracy depends on the heading system, remote sensors, navigation receivers, switching, synchro or resolver interfaces, wiring, supply and indicator calibration. A correct visual indication requires the entire signal chain to be serviceable.

Related receivers, antennas and heading equipment are system components, not interchangeable replacements for the KI 229. The indicator can be installed only where the aircraft approval supports its electrical interface and presentation.
