Course selection and guidance display

In VOR operation, the OBS knob rotates the compass card to select the desired course. The vertical deviation bar then shows the aircraft’s lateral displacement from that course when valid receiver data is present, while TO/FROM information assists with correct interpretation. During an approved localizer approach, the lateral bar displays displacement from the localizer centerline using the sensitivity provided by the connected navigation receiver.

The horizontal pointer presents glideslope deviation when compatible vertical-guidance information is valid. NAV and GS flags warn when the corresponding information is unavailable or unreliable. A centered pointer is meaningful only when the receiver, antenna, selected frequency, validity flags, wiring and aircraft procedures all support the indication. The KI 206 does not calculate the route or approach by itself.

Navigation interfaces and signal path

A representative chain is navigation antenna → approved VOR/localizer/glideslope receiver or navigator → lateral and vertical deviation, validity and TO/FROM signals → KI 206 display. Course selection from the OBS mechanism is returned through the approved interface where required. Some installations also route deviation information to a flight director or autopilot, but the exact arrangement must be confirmed from the aircraft wiring data.

Official BendixKing documentation shows the KI 206 as an associated course-deviation indicator in compatible navigation-system arrangements. This does not establish universal compatibility among all KI 206 suffixes. A navigator, NAV/COM, switching unit or autopilot may be a related system component without being supplied with, or interchangeable with, this indicator.

The authentic rear photograph identifies the unit as a Bendix/King KI 206 VOR/LOC/G.S. Indicator, Part Number 066-3034-05. The plate shows serial number 66189, weight 1.3 lb, DO-138 environmental-category information, TSO C40a, C36c Class D Category 2 and C34c Class D Category 2 references, AlliedSignal Avionics manufacturer marking, Singapore manufacture and CAGE 22373. These values belong to the photographed -05 unit.

Receiving inspection should compare the complete plate, serial and modification marks, bezel, compass card, OBS knob, deviation pointers, NAV and GS flags, connector and mounting points. Bench testing should verify course-card rotation, resolver or selection output where applicable, lateral and vertical deviation, flag logic, damping, centering and lighting with approved test equipment. Signal levels and connector pins must come from the applicable KI 206 manual.
