Frequency selection and ADF operation

The KR 87 receives signals from selected nondirectional radio beacons and provides processed information for a compatible bearing indicator. Its display supports active and standby frequency management, while the transfer control changes the selected frequency according to the operating procedure. The resulting bearing is influenced by antenna installation, signal propagation, station geometry, terrain, weather and electrical interference and must be interpreted within approved navigation procedures.

ADF mode supports normal bearing operation. BFO is available for suitable identification signals. FLT/ET and SET/RST controls manage flight-time or elapsed-time functions presented by the receiver. These timer features are separate from the radio bearing function. Functional testing should therefore confirm both navigation-related behavior and the front-panel display and timer controls.

Companion equipment and signal flow

A representative chain is crew selection at the KR 87 → receiver frequency generation and processing → compatible loop and sense antenna → NDB transmission → bearing output → approved cockpit ADF indicator. Station identification audio can be routed through the aircraft audio system. The exact bearing-indicator and antenna Part Numbers must be taken from the aircraft documentation, because several similar King-family components exist.

Fault isolation should include the antenna and its cable, power, connector, audio path, bearing indicator, aircraft bonding and the external station environment. A front display that powers normally does not by itself confirm valid bearing performance.
