Distance-measuring function of the KN 63

The KN 63 transmits coded interrogation pulse pairs through the aircraft DME antenna. A selected ground transponder replies after a controlled delay, and the transceiver measures the round-trip time to calculate slant-range distance. Compatible cockpit equipment can then present distance and, where supported, derived groundspeed and time-to-station information. The indicated distance is geometric slant range to the facility and is not always equal to horizontal map distance, especially directly above a station.

Channel selection is provided by compatible navigation equipment through the approved tuning interface. Official installation material recognizes remote KN 63 equipment in systems using BendixKing serial DME tuning. The exact navigator, indicator and data path vary by aircraft installation. No specific aircraft type is claimed from the model name alone, and eligibility must be confirmed from the aircraft equipment list and approved alteration or type-design data.

System signal path and associated equipment

A representative signal chain is compatible NAV or GPS navigator → approved DME channeling interface → KN 63 remote transceiver → DME antenna → ground-station reply → KN 63 ranging processor → compatible cockpit display or avionics interface. Missing distance information may result from tuning data, antenna or coaxial-cable faults, power, wiring, display interface, ground-station geometry or the transceiver itself.
