KDI 574 display functions

The KDI 574 is designed to present distance, groundspeed and time-to-station information received from a compatible DME installation. Distance is derived from the elapsed time between airborne interrogation and ground-station reply. Groundspeed and time-to-station are calculated values based on changing slant range and are most useful when the aircraft is tracking toward or away from the selected DME facility.

BendixKing documentation distinguishes the KDI 574 as a master DME display without the source selector switch used on the KDI 572 arrangement. This difference affects how the installed navigation source and DME channel are controlled. Exact display logic, hold function, lighting and annunciations must be interpreted through the approved operating data for the aircraft rather than assumed from other KDI family members.

Compatible system and signal flow

A representative chain is approved navigation-channel source → KDI 574 master interface → compatible remote DME transceiver → DME antenna and ground station → processed distance information → KDI 574 display. Manufacturer documentation associates KDI 574 displays with compatible equipment such as the KDM 706A where the combination is approved. The remote transceiver supplies the radio and ranging function; the KDI 574 supplies the cockpit presentation and control interface.

An approved system may also provide information to a KDI 573 slaved display at an additional crew position. The KDI 573 does not replace the KDI 574 master. The authentic gallery photograph shows a KDI 574 plate with Part Number 066-1069-04, serial number 84806, a stated weight of 0.7 lb, approximately 0.32 kg, and TSO C66a and DO-160 references. These values belong to the photographed -04 unit. Exact panel depth, cutout, connector pin assignment and supply requirements have not been inferred from the KDI 572 or KDI 573.

Receiving inspection should verify the model legend, exact plate, serial number, display window, bezel, mounting features, rear connector, overhaul release and preservation. An installation test should cover power-up, illumination, display segments, data validity, channel response, hold behavior and communication with the compatible remote transceiver. DME performance also depends on the antenna, coaxial cable, navigation-channel source, transceiver and line-of-sight to the ground station.
