Radar altitude measurement and signal chain

Honeywell describes the KRA 405B as a lightweight, solid-state airborne radar-altimeter receiver/transmitter with a nominal operating range from 0 to 2,500 ft. In a typical system, the transmit antenna directs the signal toward the surface, the receive antenna collects the reflected energy, and the KRA 405B processes the delay to derive geometric height above the terrain.

A simplified chain is KRA 405B RF transmitter → approved transmit antenna → terrain reflection → approved receive antenna → KRA 405B receiver and processor → analog or digital height output → compatible indicator, flight-control, warning or terrain-awareness equipment. Exact connected devices and output use depend on the aircraft installation; the unit does not provide a useful cockpit indication without the required antennas, wiring and receiving systems.

Current Honeywell family data lists 27.5 VDC nominal power with ±20% tolerance and approximately 850 mA nominal current, a 4.2 to 4.4 GHz operating band centered at 4,300 ±15 MHz, a maximum weight of 3 lb and overall dimensions of approximately 3 × 3.5 × 11 in. The published operating temperature is −55 °C to +70 °C, with storage from −55 °C to +85 °C.

Honeywell publishes accuracy of ±3 ft or ±3% below 500 ft and ±5% above 500 ft for the KRA 405B family. The authentic plate on this exact -0101 unit identifies Part Number 066-01153-0101 and serial number 3499. It also shows TSO C87, DO-155, RTCA/DO-160C, DO-178B Level A and FCC ID ASYKRA405B.

A source discrepancy must be kept visible: Honeywell's current generic product page lists DO-160B, while the exact photographed -0101 plate states DO-160C. For this product card the exact plate is the recommended identification value. Maintenance and installation decisions should still follow the approved data tied to the serial-numbered unit, because generic family literature may span more than one production configuration.

Installation, 5G note and replacement checks

Honeywell states that KRA 405B units can use rigid or shock mounting and the same rack arrangement as the earlier KRA 405, subject to approved installation data. Before fitting this unit, verify the complete suffix, rack, front connectors, RF cables, antenna types and spacing, aircraft wiring, power protection, output interfaces and any required system calibration. Similar housing geometry is not sufficient evidence of interchangeability.

Honeywell also publishes current 5G-interference guidance in which certain approved operating paths use external band-pass filter Part Number 68013467-001. That filter is not assumed to be included with 066-01153-0101. Whether it is required depends on the aircraft, regulatory approval and applicable AMOC or installation instructions, so operators should verify their own approved compliance path before return to service.
