Mode S uses a unique 24-bit aircraft address so that an interrogation can be directed to a particular aircraft and the reply can be identified without ambiguity. Honeywell documentation describes standard 56-bit and extended 112-bit messages together with periodic squitter transmission. These functions help reduce unnecessary replies and support more capable air-to-ground and air-to-air surveillance communication than a basic Mode A/C transponder.

For the -1602 configuration, the Honeywell installation manual lists extended BITE, antenna diversity, TCAS II compatibility, Level 3 datalink and Flight ID reporting. It also identifies HIRF and lightning qualification for this version. Burst tuning and remote IDENT are not listed for -1602. These are configuration characteristics, not evidence that every function is enabled in every aircraft; the connected controls, air-data source, TCAS equipment, wiring and aircraft approval determine the installed capability.

Power, RF operation and installation

The MST 67A is a remotely installed 4 MCU unit using 13.75–28 V DC aircraft power with a listed consumption of 45 W. Honeywell specifies nominal transmitter power of 400 W, a transmit frequency of 1090 ±1 MHz and receiver frequency of 1030 ±0.2 MHz. Maximum reply rates are listed as 750 PRF for ATCRBS and 50 PRF for Mode S. Forced-air cooling is not required under the documented installation conditions.

The transponder uses an ARINC 404A connector and must be installed with the correct mounting rack, RF coaxial cables, antennas, bonding, circuit protection and approved harness. Altitude data can be supplied through compatible ARINC 575, ARINC 706 or Gillham Mode C sources. The full Part Number, modification status, software level, Mode S address strapping and connector arrangement should be compared with the aircraft equipment list and wiring diagrams before installation.

Controls, air-data sources and related equipment

Honeywell's system manual lists several possible cockpit controls for MST 67A installations: KFS 578A, PS-578A, CD 671C, PS-550, CTA-81A and CTA-81D. It also identifies the KA 60 omnidirectional antenna. A diversity configuration normally uses approved upper and lower antennas, while TCAS integration requires the applicable high-speed ARINC 429 interfaces and approved system architecture.

These components are functionally related equipment, not interchangeable alternatives to the transponder and not an assumed delivery set. The exact control head, antenna installation, air-data computer and TCAS connection depend on the aircraft configuration. No specific aircraft type is claimed for serial number 1850 because a type-specific equipment record or installation approval was not supplied with the photographed unit.
