Surveillance and communication functions

The transponder replies on 1090 MHz to interrogations received on 1030 MHz. In Mode S operation, a unique 24-bit aircraft address allows ground or airborne interrogators to identify a particular aircraft while reducing unnecessary replies from other aircraft. The system installation manual also describes standard 56-bit and extended 112-bit Mode S messages, together with periodic squitter transmission.

Depending on the approved aircraft configuration, the connected installation can provide pressure-altitude information from ARINC 575, ARINC 706 or Gillham Mode C sources. Control and maintenance data are exchanged through the interfaces defined by Honeywell documentation. These capabilities depend on the exact transponder configuration, installed control unit, air-data source, antenna arrangement and aircraft approval.

Installation of the 066-01143-0501 transponder

Honeywell data for the MST 67A family specifies a remote 4 MCU unit using 13.75–28 V DC aircraft power, with a maximum listed consumption of 45 W. The manual states that forced-air cooling is not required, but the mounting location must still meet the environmental, clearance and ventilation requirements of the approved installation. The equipment uses an ARINC 404A connector and the specified mounting rack and interconnecting harness.

Before installation, technicians should verify the complete Part Number, modification status, software level, connector keying, rack, antenna configuration and Mode S address strapping. Installation also requires correct RF coaxial routing, bonding, circuit protection and approved configuration of the air-data and control inputs. Return to service must follow the applicable aircraft and equipment maintenance data.

The Honeywell system manual lists the KFS 578A control unit, PS-578A control panel, CD 671C control unit, PS-550 control panel, CTA-81A control unit and CTA-81D control unit as equipment used in MST 67A installations, depending on system configuration. TCAS-compatible installations require the correct antenna diversity arrangement and approved interfaces.
