Altitude selection and capture sequence

The official BendixKing pilot guide describes altitude selection with the inner knob in the altitude position. The outer concentric control changes the selected altitude in 1,000 ft increments and the inner control changes it in 100 ft increments. The documented selection range extends up to 35,000 ft. Pressing ARM prepares the compatible autopilot to capture the chosen altitude.

As the aircraft approaches the selected level, the KAS 297B computes the appropriate round-out point using vertical-speed information. The display changes from ARM to CAPT when capture begins, and the compatible system transitions to altitude hold at the selected altitude. This sequence depends on proper sensor inputs and the configuration described in the aircraft supplement.

Vertical-speed selection and display

Pulling the inner knob places the selector in vertical-speed entry mode. The pilot can preselect a climb or descent rate and engage vertical-speed hold with the ENG control where the installation permits. The selected rate is shown on the display, while up or down indication distinguishes climb from descent. The actual aircraft response is controlled by the connected autopilot, not by this panel alone.

The guide also notes that a mechanical vertical-speed indicator can differ from the selected value because of instrument accuracy and lag. This is an operational consideration rather than a product fault by itself. Troubleshooting must evaluate air-data input, autopilot response, display behavior and aircraft performance using approved procedures.

Altitude alerting and cockpit controls

The KAS 297B provides altitude alerting independently of whether the autopilot is engaged. Official operating information describes an ALERT indication and a two-second aural tone at 1,000 ft from the selected altitude. The alert remains until the aircraft is within the configured inner band, normally 300 ft or 500 ft depending on installation approval, and warns again if the aircraft departs the selected altitude.
