Crown-series face and frequency coverage

Manufacturer documentation identifies 064-1052-70 as the Crown-series version of the 064-1052-60 configuration. It has a solid black face without the silver trim used on certain other KY 96A versions. The -70 unit covers 118.000 to 136.975 MHz in 25 kHz steps and provides 760 available communication frequencies. Its receiver uses 25 kHz selectivity.

This configuration provides an 8 W audio output into a 4-ohm load. The KY 96A family also includes versions with different frequency limits, receiver selectivity and audio-output arrangements. A similar front panel does not prove interchangeability. The exact -70 suffix, 28 V supply, rack, connector keying, audio load and aircraft approval must all be checked before replacement.

Controls, memory and cockpit operation

The front panel presents active and standby frequency windows with a transfer function for moving the standby selection into use. Published product information describes nine programmable memory channels in addition to the displayed frequencies. Non-volatile storage retains selected information without an external backup battery. A compatible remote transfer switch may also be installed where the aircraft wiring provides for that function.

Automatic audio leveling helps control changes in received audio strength, and the display can provide a stuck-microphone indication. The transmitter is documented with at least 5 W RF output and a duty cycle of one minute transmitting followed by four minutes receiving. These features depend on a correct antenna system and installation; radio performance should not be evaluated without checking coaxial losses, microphone level, audio load and aircraft supply voltage.

The KY 96A operates from a 28 V aircraft electrical system. Published data gives a cabinet size of approximately 6.25 in wide, 1.3 in high and 10.50 in long, equivalent to about 158.8 × 33.0 × 266.7 mm. The listed weight is approximately 2.9 lb, or 1.32 kg. Final clearance must also account for the rack, rear connector, wiring bend radius and required cooling space.

The documented operating temperature range is -20 °C to +55 °C. Transmitter qualification is listed under TSO C37c Class 4, while the receiver is associated with TSO C38c and the applicable DO-186 class for the -70 configuration. Installation and post-installation tests must follow the KY 96A / KY 97A manual rather than relying only on product-card values.
