Frequency and channel control from the cockpit

The KCU 951 supports tuning through 29.9999 MHz and stores 99 pilot-programmable channels. The front panel provides FREQ-KHZ and CHANNEL display areas together with MODE, FREQ/CHAN, clarifier, squelch, volume, store and program functions. A photocell supports automatic adjustment of display brightness for changing cockpit-light conditions, while the 5 V clear-lamp configuration supplies the panel lighting specified for this suffix.

Frequency selection entered on the panel is passed through aircraft wiring to the compatible receiver-exciter. The crew can recall stored channels or operate by selected frequency according to the approved system configuration. Clarifier control permits fine receive-frequency adjustment, while squelch and volume affect the monitored audio path. The control unit does not generate transmitter output or tune the aircraft antenna on its own.

A blank display or failure to change frequency should therefore be investigated as a system problem rather than assumed to be a panel fault. Power supply, 5 V lighting, connector condition, aircraft wiring, KTR 953 communication, coupler status and antenna-system faults can all affect normal operation. Approved bench equipment is required to isolate the control head from the remote radio units.

Relationship with KTR 953 and KAC 952

In a compatible KHF 950 system, the KCU 951 works with the KTR 953 receiver-exciter and KAC 952 antenna coupler. The KTR 953 performs transmit and receive signal processing. The KAC 952 adjusts the antenna matching network so the installed HF antenna presents an acceptable load across the selected frequency. A simplified chain is crew input on KCU 951 → KTR 953 receiver-exciter → KAC 952 coupler → approved HF antenna.

These units are associated system components, not interchangeable products and not part of this KCU 951 delivery unless a quotation explicitly includes them. An installed HF system may also contain aircraft-specific control relays, audio-panel connections, keying circuits, antenna-current indication and bonding arrangements. The actual wiring and approved equipment combination must be established from the aircraft installation data.

After installation, a functional check should cover display readability, frequency entry, channel storage and recall, mode selection, clarifier, squelch, volume, transmitter keying and successful antenna coupling. Radio-frequency output and reflected-power checks belong to the complete system test and should not be inferred from normal control-panel illumination alone.

Physical configuration and environmental data

Published KCU 951 dimensions are approximately 5.75 inches wide, 2.00 inches high and 7.7 inches long. Approximate weight is 1.1 lb, or 0.50 kg. The documented operating temperature range is −20 °C to +55 °C. Qualification references for the family include TSO C31c and C32c together with the applicable DO-163 and DO-160 environmental categories.

The 064-1016-01 panel uses a black bezel and 5 V clear lighting. The unit mounts in an approved cockpit cutout, with rear clearance for the connector, wiring support and cooling. Mounting screws, rack condition, connector keying, electrical bonding, display glass, knobs and photocell should be inspected before installation. Pin assignments and lighting connections must come from the correct KCU 951 drawing rather than another BendixKing control head.
