Functional role in the KHF 950 system

BendixKing documentation describes a basic KHF 950 system as the KCU 951 control unit, KAC 952 power-amplifier/antenna coupler and KTR 953 receiver/exciter. A KFS 594 miniature control unit with a KA 594 bus adapter can be used in documented alternative installations. The crew selects frequency and operating mode at the controller, and those commands are passed to the KTR 953.

On receive, the KTR 953 processes the selected HF signal and supplies audio through the aircraft communication interface. On transmit, its exciter produces a very low-power signal at the selected frequency. That signal is sent to the KAC 952, where it is amplified and matched to the connected antenna. The practical chain is control unit to KTR 953 receiver/exciter, then KAC 952 power amplifier and coupler, followed by the approved HF antenna.

Frequency coverage and system performance

Published KHF 950 documentation identifies system operation from 2.0 to 29.9999 MHz with 100 Hz tuning resolution and a nominal 150 W peak-envelope-power voice output at the system level. These are capabilities of the assembled KHF 950 installation, not direct output ratings of the KTR 953 exciter alone. Antenna type, coupler configuration, control equipment and approval data determine the usable aircraft installation.

The exact 064-1015-00 suffix is important. BendixKing documentation states that only selected KTR 953 suffixes, including -01, -11, -41 and -53, support a standard external SELCAL decoder. The -00 configuration must therefore not be advertised as automatically SELCAL-compatible. A later suffix or a visually similar KTR 953 cannot be treated as an interchangeable replacement without checking system wiring, features and approval status.

Identification plate and electrical requirements

The original plate on the photographed unit identifies model KTR 953, Part Number 064-1015-00 and serial number 6507. It states 28 V DC, 1 A peak and 0.75 A nominal for this exact unit. A system installation manual may show a larger supply allowance when power for an associated control unit is included; the product plate value is retained here as the direct rating of the exact photographed receiver/exciter.

The same plate gives a weight of 6.6 lb, approximately 2.97 kg, and lists TSO C31c and C32c qualification markings together with DO-163 and DO-160 environmental references. Connector type, pin assignment and exact mounting dimensions were not independently confirmed from the reviewed open documentation, so they must be taken from the applicable KHF 950 installation manual before wiring or installation.
