Attitude and command presentation in the KI 256

The instrument contains an air-driven vertical gyro. BendixKing guidance notes that the aircraft pressure or vacuum system must be operating and the gyro must be allowed approximately three minutes to reach operating speed before the flight-control system is used. This air-driven construction distinguishes the KI 256 from electrically driven attitude-reference instruments that may look similar on the panel.

During operation, the attitude sphere moves relative to the fixed aircraft symbol to show pitch and bank. The flight-director computer supplies pitch and roll steering commands to the single-cue command bar, allowing the pilot to follow the computed guidance manually. The KI 256 is an indicator and vertical-gyro reference; it is not a complete autopilot computer and cannot provide automatic control without the appropriate sensors, computer, mode controller, servos, wiring and approved system configuration.

Use with BendixKing KFC flight-control systems

Technical listings identify the KI 256 for use in BendixKing KFC 150, KFC 200, KFC 225 and KFC 250 flight-control system families. In these installations, the instrument displays attitude and the pitch-and-roll commands produced by the applicable flight-director computer. The precise connected equipment varies by system and aircraft, so the presence of a compatible KFC family designation does not by itself establish interchangeability or approval for a particular airframe.

Before replacement, maintenance personnel should compare the complete Part Number, panel tilt, modification status, serial-number requirements, pneumatic connections, electrical connector, lighting configuration and aircraft records. The instrument must also be checked together with the aircraft vacuum or pressure source because inadequate gyro air supply can affect erection, indication and flight-director operation.

The 060-0017-00 version is specified for a 0° instrument-panel installation. The associated 060-0017-01 version uses an 8° panel tilt and should be treated as a separate configuration. A visual match of the front bezel is not enough to confirm a replacement: the exact suffix and installation geometry must agree with the aircraft maintenance manual, wiring diagrams, equipment list and approved alteration data.

The photographed unit has a square front mounting flange with four corner holes, a deep rectangular housing and rear pneumatic and electrical interfaces. The rear view also shows the original KING identification plate and protected ports. The photographs are useful for identification, but installation hardware, mating connectors and hoses are not assumed to be included unless they are specifically confirmed in the quotation.
