Multifunction display role in the G1000 system

In a typical installation, the GDU 1500 works beside compatible GDU 1040-series primary flight displays. The PFDs concentrate the pilot's primary attitude, air-data and navigation references, while the larger GDU 1500 supports map, flight-plan, engine, systems and optional weather or traffic pages. Available pages depend on the aircraft type, software, enabled features and connected equipment.

Garmin system documentation describes high-speed data-bus communication between the GDU 1500, compatible GDU 1040 displays and a GDL 69A data-link unit. It also identifies an RS-232 link with a GCU 475 flight-management controller in applicable installations. These units are associated system components, not part of this display delivery and not direct substitutes for the GDU 1500.

The lower row of soft keys changes function with the active page. Two right-side card slots support approved database and service functions. Database cards, software loads, unlocks and subscriptions can be tied to an aircraft configuration, so their inclusion and currency must be confirmed separately.

Electrical load, cooling and exact suffix

The authentic identification view shows GDU 1500, P/N 011-01108-10 and 28 VDC input. Garmin maintenance data for an exact-suffix installation list a nominal current of 2.0 A when the unit temperature is above −15 °C and up to 3.2 A below −15 °C. The same installation provides a separate MFD cooling fan, demonstrating that airflow and cooling provisions are part of the approved aircraft design.

The complete suffix is important. GDU 1500 units with different Part Numbers can vary by hardware, software, aircraft approval or installed options even when their front appearance is similar. A display must therefore be selected by the full 011-01108-10 designation and checked against the aircraft maintenance manual, wiring data, equipment list and approved software configuration.

Installation and receiving inspection

The identification plate references TSO C113 and ETSO C113 display qualifications, together with applicable environmental and software compliance data. Installation requires the correct panel structure, rear connector arrangement, circuit protection, bonding, cooling, data-bus wiring and configuration procedures. Connector kits, data cards and mounting hardware are not assumed to be included unless they appear in the quotation.

Receiving inspection should verify the exact Part Number, serial number, modification marks, display glass, bezel, soft keys, card slots, rear connector area and release paperwork. After replacement, an approved technician should complete the required software, configuration and functional checks. Testing should confirm display operation, dimming, soft-key response, database access, communication with the PFDs and all connected navigation, engine and airframe sources.
