GS-31-3 symbol generator, not an electrical power generator
GS-31-3 is an electronic symbol generator used in the SEI-31/10 unified indication system, also identified as Nartsiss-M. The Russian term «генератор символов» describes a unit that forms display symbology; it does not mean an electrical generator. For this reason the product belongs with electronic control and display-system units rather than with aircraft starter-generators.

Function in the SEI-31/10 indication system
The unit forms graphic symbols and prepares them for presentation on the system displays using commands and data from the aircraft computing and sensor channels. The reviewed system description lists GS-31-3 together with the ILS-31 head-up display, IPV-1 direct-view display, BCO-20 digital-processing unit, BSK-S synchronization and switching unit and an aircraft computer. Each unit has a separate function and is not interchangeable.
Documented MiG-29 application
SEI-31/10 is documented as an indication system for the MiG-29 avionics complex. It displays radar, aiming, flight, navigation and tactical information on the head-up and direct-view indicators. This establishes the system context for GS-31-3, but the exact aircraft series and equipment modification must still be confirmed from the aircraft records and the product data plate.
