PUR-31 radar mode control panel

PUR-31 is an aircraft radar mode control panel used in the radar sighting complex of the MiG-29 fighter aircraft. The panel is associated with the RLPK-29 radar sighting complex and the N-019 onboard radar station installed on MiG-29 aircraft, including the 9-12 version according to applicable documentation. The abbreviation PUR means mode control panel. The unit is installed in the cockpit and provides pilot control over selected radar operating modes used for target search, tracking preparation and system checks.

Mode selection function of PUR-31

The PUR-31 panel allows the pilot to select radar operating modes related to target aspect and radar emission control. Through the panel, the pilot can set operating logic for target engagement depending on whether the target is approaching, moving away or when the target aspect is not known. The panel does not operate as an independent radar unit; it functions as a cockpit control interface connected with the radar sighting complex. Its commands are processed by the associated radar and weapons control system equipment.

Target aspect control through PUR-31

One of the main functions of PUR-31 is selection of target aspect modes. The panel includes positions for forward-hemisphere operation, rear-hemisphere operation and automatic mode. The “V” / “Встреча” mode is used for head-on target engagement logic in the forward hemisphere. The “D” / “Догон” mode is used for targets in the rear hemisphere. The “AVT” / “Автомат” mode allows automatic alternation of radar pulse repetition logic when exact target aspect information is not available. These modes support correct operation of the N-019 radar within the RLPK-29 complex.

PUR-31 in RLPK-29 and N-019 integration

The PUR-31 panel works as part of the MiG-29 radar and weapons control architecture. It is functionally connected with RLPK-29 equipment, the N-019 radar station, the Ts100 digital computer, radar generator units and the PK-31 control panel. The unit may also be used during built-in system control procedures performed before flight. In this role, it helps select test or equivalent operating conditions for checking radar readiness and system operation. Exact interconnection and signal logic are defined by aircraft wiring and radar complex documentation.

Cockpit installation of PUR-31

PUR-31 is designed as a modular panel-mounted cockpit unit for installation on the MiG-29 pilot’s side console. Depending on cockpit layout and aircraft documentation, the panel may be installed on the left or right cockpit console. The front panel includes rotary and toggle controls used to select radar aspect modes, emission state and target elevation difference input. Since the unit is used in a fighter cockpit, its construction must withstand vibration, acceleration loads, pressure changes and the operating environment typical for maneuvering aircraft.
