Flight Light
Available on back-order
The OPS-57 is an aircraft formation flight light used as part of external lighting equipment on military airplanes and helicopters. Its main purpose is to provide visual marking of an aircraft during formation flight, especially at night or in poor visibility. The light helps other crews maintain distance, interval and relative position in the group. Unlike landing or taxi lights, the OPS-57 is not intended to illuminate the ground. It is a signalling and orientation light for aircraft flying together.
During night formation flights, pilots need stable visual references on nearby aircraft. The OPS-57 provides such a reference by emitting a controlled light signal visible from defined viewing angles. This allows the following or neighboring crew to judge the aircraft’s position and orientation without relying only on radio communication or instruments. On helicopters such as Mi-8 and Mi-171E, the light supports safer group flight, approach, maneuvering and positioning when several aircraft operate in the same area.
The OPS-57 is designed with a specific light direction rather than a full circular beacon pattern. According to the supplied description, the light flow is oriented rearward at approximately 45°, so aircraft flying behind can clearly see spacing and lateral position. The light has a wide fan-shaped dispersion angle, which helps maintain visibility within the required observation zone. This makes the unit suitable for formation flying, where the important task is not maximum brightness, but correct light direction, color and visibility sector.
The OPS-57 is typically equipped with a yellow light filter. The filter forms the required color of the formation flight signal and helps distinguish the light from other external aircraft lights. Color and brightness are important because the signal must be visible enough for formation orientation, but not so strong that it blinds or distracts pilots flying behind. During inspection, the filter should be checked for cracks, darkening, overheating marks, contamination and secure installation in the light body.
The OPS-57 is installed on the external surface of aircraft and helicopters in positions visible to other aircraft in formation. On many aircraft types, formation lights may be arranged in a “T” pattern on the upper fuselage and vertical stabilizer area. Such placement helps pilots behind and above the aircraft understand its orientation and maintain correct formation geometry. Exact installation location depends on the aircraft type, lighting layout and maintenance documentation.
The OPS-57 operates from a 27 V aircraft electrical system and uses a lamp with maximum power of 25 W. This makes it a relatively low-power signalling light compared with landing or search lights. The unit must still provide stable light output and correct visibility. During maintenance, wiring, contacts, lamp condition, filter condition and body sealing should be inspected. Weak light, flickering or unstable operation may be caused by lamp wear, poor contacts, contamination, voltage drop or damage to the light assembly.
The OPS-57 is used on military aircraft and helicopters, including Mi-8 and Mi-171E applications depending on the external lighting configuration. It is classified as a formation flight light and is installed for group-flight visual orientation. Before replacement or procurement, the part number, installation position, lamp type, color filter and aircraft documentation should be checked. Similar external lights may differ by color, viewing angle, mounting dimensions or electrical characteristics, so substitution should not be made only by appearance.
For procurement, the full designation OPS-57 should be stated together with the required condition, quantity, aircraft type and documentation requirements. If a specific version such as OPS-57T is required, this should be clarified in the request. The unit may be supplied as new, from storage, serviceable or as otherwise agreed. For aircraft installation, product documentation should confirm designation, acceptance status, technical condition and compliance with the applicable aircraft lighting system.
