Description

PP-5MD1 is the transmitter–receiver unit of the modernized RV-5MD1 radio altimeter system, designed for continuous measurement of true aircraft height above ground or water during flight.
It is the core functional element of the RV-5MD1 kit, generating, transmitting, receiving, and processing microwave signals to determine altitude and provide data to cockpit instrumentation and onboard systems.

The PP-5MD1 operates together with external antennas, a cockpit altitude indicator, cabling, and a shock-mount frame.
Functions performed in the system include:
• transmission of frequency-modulated probing pulses;
• reception and processing of reflected signals;
• computation of real altitude in real time;
• output of Danger Height alerts;
• generation of Failure/OK status outputs;
• built-in health monitoring and reference-height test.

A complete RV-5MD1 installation typically includes:
PP-5MD1 transceiver,
AR5-1 antennas,
UV-5M altitude indicator,
RA-5 shock-mount frame,
— interconnecting cables.

The system was used on Soviet/Russian helicopters and aircraft for safe low-altitude flight operations.
