PP-5M1D1 is the transmitter–receiver unit of the modernized RV-5M1D1 radio altimeter, designed for continuous measurement of true aircraft height above terrain or water.
It is the central electronic element of the system, generating, transmitting, receiving and processing microwave signals and supplying real-time altitude data to cockpit displays and onboard avionics.

Compared to the standard PP-5M, the PP-5M1D1 incorporates upgrades enabling integration with collision-avoidance and external surveillance systems (TCAS / RA interfaces).
This allows the unit to deliver compatible height information beyond the internal indicator loop.

In operation, the PP-5M1D1 performs:
• transmission of the radar probing signal;
• reception and filtering of the reflected return;
• calculation of actual aircraft altitude;
• output of dangerous-height alarms;
• Failure/OK status signaling;
• high-integrity test verification;
• distribution of altitude data to cockpit and external systems.

A standard RV-5M1D1 installation typically includes:
— PP-5M1D1 transceiver,
— two AR5-1 antennas,
— UV-5M altitude indicator,
— RA-5 shock-mount frame,
— interconnecting cables.

The upgraded configuration supports safe flight operations at low altitude on helicopters and aircraft while adding interoperability for modern avionics suites.
