Altitude Indicator
Available on back-order
The A-034-4-12 is a pointer-type cockpit altitude indicator used in RV-5M and A-037 radio altimeter systems. It provides continuous visual indication of true aircraft height above terrain or water. The instrument is intended for low-altitude flight profiles where the crew needs a quick and reliable analog reading of actual clearance below the aircraft. The A-034-4-12 does not measure altitude by itself. It works as the cockpit display element of the radio altimeter system and receives height data from the associated altimeter electronics.
The A-034-4-12 has a display range from 0 to 700 meters. Its scale uses different division steps across the range, with better visual resolution at lower heights. From 0 to 20 meters, the scale division is 2 meters. From 20 to 50 meters, it changes to 5 meters. From 50 to 100 meters, the division is 10 meters, and from 100 to 700 meters it increases to 50 meters. This layout is practical for radio-altimeter indication because the lower part of the scale is the most important during approach, descent and low-level operation.
The A-034-4-12 includes a TEST function for checking altimeter operability from the cockpit. When the radio altimeter system is functioning correctly, pressing the TEST button moves the pointer to approximately 15 meters. This gives the crew or maintenance personnel a quick confirmation that the indication channel is responding. If the pointer does not move as expected, the system should be checked according to the applicable RV-5M or A-037 documentation. A failed TEST response may be caused by the indicator itself, the transceiver, wiring, power supply or antenna-related faults.
The indicator has a drop-out blinker flag that appears when the radio altimeter system is malfunctioning or no usable ground return is received. This is a critical feature because the pointer alone could otherwise be misleading if the signal behind it is not valid. When the blinker appears, the displayed altitude should not be relied on until the system is checked. For troubleshooting, the fault should be treated at system level: indicator, receiver-transmitter unit, antennas, cabling, connectors, power supply and protection elements all need to be considered.
The A-034-4-12 has a combined Danger Height selector knob and warning lamp. The crew can set the required altitude threshold directly on the instrument. When the aircraft descends to or below the selected value, the yellow triangle warning light illuminates. This gives the pilot a separate visual alert at the moment when the aircraft reaches the preset danger height. The feature is useful during landing, descent, low-level flight, night operation, poor visibility or flight over water, where fast reaction to low height is important.
The A-034-4-12 works with corresponding transceivers used in RV-5M and A-037 radio altimeter systems, including the A-037-1 family depending on configuration. The complete radio altimeter set may include transceiver units, antennas, cabling, power supply circuits, protection devices and cockpit indication. Since the A-034-4-12 is one part of the system, compatibility should be confirmed by the aircraft documentation and installed radio altimeter variant. Similar A-034 indicators may have the same general appearance but different scales, markings, connector arrangements or system applications.
For supply or replacement, the full designation A-034-4-12 should be used. Alternative descriptions such as A034-4-12, RV-5M/A-037 indicator or 700 m pointer indicator can help clarify the item, but the exact designation remains the main reference. Before installation, the instrument should be checked for pointer movement, TEST response, blinker operation, warning lamp function, scale readability, connector condition, mounting integrity and documentation. Technical passport and maintenance manual should be requested when the part is supplied for aircraft use.
